650 campuses, 850 healthcare orgs, a new government almost every week: where Workday jobs come from

Workday names four industries in its annual report: financial services, government, healthcare and higher education. Each one hires Workday people on its own clock, with its own modules and its own rules. Here is what the public data says about each sector, and how to run a better search in it.

Workday demand is concentrated in a few sectors, and they do not look like tech

Workday says more than 11,500 organizations use its products, including more than 7,000 core Financial Management and HCM customers and more than 65% of the Fortune 500.1 Its latest annual report says its applications serve industries such as financial services, government, healthcare, higher education.2

Workday does not publish one table of customers by industry, so the figures below come from its own industry pages and press releases. They are counted in different ways and over different periods, so read them as separate signals, not a ranking.

Method: on October 15, 2026 we searched public job boards and employer career pages for roles with Workday in the title, found 41 postings, and kept only the 18 that were confirmed open on the employer's own page (15 in the U.S., 3 abroad). We classified each employer by type. This is a small, one-day sample and leans toward employers whose job pages are easy to search, so it is not a measure of total demand.

Put the two views side by side and a gap shows up. Workday's published customer counts are largest in higher education, healthcare and government. Our job-board sample was led by tech companies. Part of the reason is method: several postings we could not confirm sat on career sites at a university, a children's hospital and a housing-finance company that blocked automated checks. Large institutions tend to post on their own career sites, often with their own application steps, so their openings are easy to miss.

Our readIf you only watch job boards, you see a slice of Workday hiring. The bigger customer pools are campuses, health systems and governments, and their hiring follows its own calendar and rules.
02 · Higher education

Universities run HR, finance and now students on Workday

Workday reported in October 2025 that more than 650 institutions across 19 countries had selected it, and its higher education page says more than one-third of leading R1 research universities have chosen it.34 The annual report notes that institutions can use Workday to manage the end-to-end student and faculty lifecycle.2

The fastest-moving piece is Workday Student. Workday says it has more than 140 Workday Student customers representing more than 190 institutions, that more than 20 institutions went live in 2025, and that 85 were live in total, supporting more than 3 million student records since the product launched in 2018.3

What makes higher ed hiring different:

  • Student is a small talent pool. With 85 live institutions and more than 140 customers signed, many campuses are still implementing. People who have taken a Student module live are rare by definition.
  • Research money adds finance complexity. Research universities manage sponsored awards, so grants and sponsored-research accounting experience matters on the Financials side.
  • Process is slower and more structured. Search committees, set review dates and public pay bands at state schools are common. One open university Workday reporting role in our sample was still listed as open after its stated review date.
03 · Healthcare

Health systems bring scale, supply chain and round-the-clock workforces

Workday says more than 850 healthcare organizations run business and financial operations on it.5 In KLAS Research's 2026 ratings, Workday was named Best in KLAS for Enterprise Resource Planning (Large) and Talent Management, and Workday says it has earned top ERP ratings for large organizations nine years in a row.6

The projects are big. Fairview Health Services announced in March 2026 that it would move its 34,000 employees onto Workday for HR, finance and supply chain.7 Boston Children's Hospital was among the new customers Workday named in its fiscal 2026 results.1

What makes healthcare hiring different:

  • Supply chain is part of the job. Health systems buy Workday for inventory and procurement as well as HR and finance, so Financials and supply chain experience often go together.
  • Workforces are complex. Nurses, physicians and hourly staff across many sites mean heavy time tracking, absence, compensation and onboarding work for HCM analysts.
  • Employers are large. SHRM found a median of 61 days to fill non-executive roles at organizations with 5,000 or more employees.14 Many health systems are in that bracket.
04 · Public sector

Governments are replacing decades-old systems, one agency at a time

In September 2026, Workday said it signs a new state or local government nearly every week, with more than 100 selecting Workday in the past two years.8 The same release describes the scale: one state deployment spans more than 200 agencies and brought more than 70,000 employees onto Workday in about 30 months, replacing a heavily customized 25-year-old system. A small city went live on HCM and Financials in five months.8

There is some good news for public employers. In MissionSquare Research Institute's 2026 survey of 606 state and local HR managers, the share rating information technology roles as hard to fill fell from 68.7% in 2022 to 35.1% in 2026.9 The same survey found that more than half of jurisdictions with fewer than 100 full-time staff said their time to hire had gone up.9

The last broad public-sector timing figure we found is older: NEOGOV's 2020 report, based on 999 government agencies and higher education institutions, put average time to hire at 119 days for 2018.10 Treat it as a sign of how long public processes can run, not a current benchmark.

What makes public-sector hiring different:

  • Pay is set by scale. Classified positions sit in published pay grades, so there is less room to match a private offer. Total compensation, pension and stability carry more of the pitch.
  • Posting rules shape the timeline. Minimum posting windows, eligibility lists and panel interviews add steps that private employers skip.
  • Projects run long. Multi-year rollouts across many agencies create steady demand for HCM, Payroll and Financials analysts well after the first go-live.
05 · Financial services and tech

Financial firms take the longest to hire anyone

Gem's 2025 Recruiting Benchmarks, built on 1.3 million hires, break out time to hire for five industries. Financial services was the slowest at 63 days in 2024, against 41 days across all industries.11 That is the general hiring clock, not a Workday-only figure, but it is the clock a Workday analyst search at a bank or insurer runs on.

Source: Gem 2025 Recruiting Benchmarks, 2024 figures.11 Gem's data comes from companies using its recruiting software, which skew toward tech employers. Gem does not report healthcare, education or government separately.

Financial services hiring also leans on people already in the building and on sourcing. In Gem's data, internal hires made up 13.29% of financial services hires, and directly sourced candidates were 1.13% of applications but 9.74% of hires.11 Only 0.4% of applicants were hired, with 22 interviews per hire.11 Regulators and audit teams care about controls, so Workday security, segregation of duties and financial reporting skills come up often in these roles.

Tech companies move faster: Gem shows 37 days for computer software and 48 for IT services and hardware.11 In our job-board sample, tech companies posted the most Workday roles, often for a single HCM or Financials analyst who covers a lot of ground on a small team.

06 · The playbook

Hiring tips for each sector

  1. Higher education: recruit for the module you are about to launch

If you are mid-implementation on Workday Student or Financials, look for people who took that module live elsewhere, including at partners. Post your review date and stick to it so strong candidates do not drift off.

  2. Healthcare: pair Financials with supply chain

Write the requisition around the processes that matter to a health system: procurement, inventory, time tracking for clinical staff. Generic "Workday analyst" titles pull in the wrong applicants.

  3. Public sector: sell the whole package early

When the pay grade is fixed, lead with retirement benefits, schedule and the scale of the project. Map out every required step, from posting window to panel, and tell candidates the timeline up front.

  4. Financial services: start sourcing on day one

In Gem's data, sourced candidates were a small slice of applications but a much bigger slice of hires. Do not wait for inbound applicants before reaching out to people.

  5. Tech: hire for range

Smaller Workday teams need people who can handle configuration, reporting and integrations. Screen with a real scenario that spans more than one area.

  6. Nonprofits: lean on fit and mission

Budgets are often tight, so be clear about which modules matter most and how much is maintenance versus new build. Mission and flexibility are real selling points.
